In the Tai Chi Ch'uan Treatise, attributed to Wang Chung Yueh (a Tai Chi Classic), there is a very revealing story about Yang Pan-hou and his powerful, explosive abdominal breathing. Here are two translations of the same passage:

T'AI CHI CH'UAN FOR HEALTH AND SELF-DEFENSE
PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICE
Translation and commentary by T.T. Liang
p. 39

"He [Yang Pan-hou] frequently tested his achievement in T'ai Chi by lying on his bed, nipping a pinch of millet with his fingers, and putting it on his navel. With one exhalation all of the millet grains were shot out to the ceiling of the house like bullets shot from a gun. It is indeed very difficult to acquire a technique like that. One must exert oneself earnestly to reach it."
