Stuart Olson discusses the lessons learned by T.T. Liang during his encounters with “Taoist Yang” throughout “THE TEN ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES OF T’AI CHI CH’UAN,” published in 1993. He also retells the story of “Taoist Yang” on pages 68 to 72 of his later book STEAL MY ART, which was published in 2000.

Briefly, when T.T. Liang first met this Taoist tai chi master, “Taoist Yang” stood on one leg, holding the posture Golden Rooster Stands On One Leg, and he instructed T.T. Liang to feel the calf of his weighted leg. T.T. Liang was astonished when he felt Taoist Yang’s calf was as soft as cotton.

Taoist Yang commented that he practices “cotton” style tai chi, not “wood” style tai chi (where the muscles remain stiff and hard, like wood).
