SIFU CHOY HAK PANG (1886-1957) AND SIFU JAMES WING WOO (1922-1994)

Grandmaster Choy Hak Pang was the first Chinese master to bring Tai Chi Chuan to America and that is why he is considered to be the father of Tai Chi Chuan in America. Sifu Choy came to the United States specifically to teach T'ai Chi Chuan to the families of the "San Francisco - China Trading company".

Sifu Jim James Wing Woo learned Tai chi Chuan (at age 8), both from the hand of the godfather of his fifth brother and Choy Hak Pan, who lived in the same block as he, both had learned directly from the Great Grandmasters Yang Cheng Fu and Chen Wei Ming, and they were precisely those who began to teach and popularize and spread this art throughout Canton, China. Sifu James Wing Woo studied with him in China, but also lived with Sifu Choy in the same apartament when he arrived to San Francisco, California.
